The initial parts of Debian Installer can be run non-destructively on a machine. You just need to stop at the partitioning step, when the installer detects your hard disk. However, for this, you need a powerpc ISO image. Then you burn it on a CD a you try booting it on your laptop. Checking the initial steps up to partitioning should be enough.
