Does it cause problems everywhere, or just on some arches ? Maybe we could
enable it on arches where it is stable and has some benefit, and leave it off

Well the thing that make me not sure about doing that is that it has
worked on ia64 and s390, and now it does not work and I don't understand
why.
Also thge same happened on sparc for 2.4. That would also say we can't
make sure we will still be able to produce smaller udeb for a given arch
for a new version of the glibc. That may be very bad if d-i start to use
this new space, and we later say that it's not possible to use -Os.
That said, it would be possible to do that for some arch only. Which
architectures really need some more space?
