oh, i almost forgot, there's one issue i neglected to mention:
the sound card doesn't seem to be detected/supported. previously it was
a cs46xx audio card which afaicr worked fine before installation, though
it's possible i had placed some extra modprobe options long ago and
forgotten about them. this might be fixed in 2.6.18, *but*, that leads
me to the next issue:
laptop freezes at X initialization in the newest kernel :(
i can boot into single user mode okay, but starting gdm freezes
the laptop requiring a hard reboot. any ideas? the card info
should be in the lspci in the previous email.
