Installed this (3.1r5) on a 'similar' machine (Toshiba Tecra 530CDT - 32 MB
of ram - 1.4 GB hard drive) with the same model of ethernet pcmcia card, and
it worked fine after the re-boot.

What are the installed packages ('dpkg --get-selections', in the hope
that you installed only a base system so that this remains readable)?
Is the pcmciautils package installed?
