Typical Linux/unix system. Just kernel is different ;-)

You can of course build your own kernel and modules.
But you have to play with building environment a little bit.
Take a look at kfreebsd-7 source package.

Fourth am I reliant to Freebsd ports?

No, in fact you cannot use them.
At about 80% of Debian packages are available on GNU/kFreeBSD,
you can choose between kfreebsd-i386 and kfreebsd-amd64.
