At our institute, we have evaluated a number of solutions for our aging firewall replacement, and what Sergio describes in this (unfinished as of now) series of blog posts, is what we're going to end up doing. I have no experience with Debian GNU/kFreeBSD on a desktop system and I can imagine it'll be lacking many features due to the gazillion Linuxisms introduced in the last few years. For a server, it looks solid, and except for the features that are lacking in the current packages, the current Squeeze distribution should do well. The firewall isn't in full production yet, though, so we might have some news in a few weeks. I'd recommend you giving it a try; if it ends up not working as you expected, you can always grab your pf rules and drop them in a FreeBSD or OpenBSD install.
