Thanks, good to know I'm not the only one :) This is still a mystery to me, the problem went away almost by accident. My system follows testing kfreebsd-i386 as well, but this happened after I apt-get upgraded for the first time in over a week -- quite a lot of stuff would have changed in userland, and also GRUB. But for some reason, despite 100 successive reboots I haven't seen this again.
