sysctl.conf missing?

hey guys, where is sysctl.conf from freebsd? i try to change the brightness level but never works, and when i look for sysctl.conf i just find this /usr/share/doc/procps/examples/sysctl.conf 
any idea?
and...god, kfreebsd is almost unusable because the laptop temperature when i'm using it is able to make me sterile.
