Package: kernel-package
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Debian's kernel build system is approaching science range. From what I
understand, our kernel chain looks like this:

(1) Upstream kernel tar.gz is unpacked, non-free stuff removed,
      resulting in kernel-source-2.6.x.orig.tar.gz.
(2) From kernel svn, a debian/ directory is added, resulting in the
      source package for kernel-source-2.6.x
(3) Debuild on that source package results in kernel-source-2.6.x.deb,
      kernel-patch-2.6.x.deb and kernel-tree-2.6.x.deb
(4) With these three packages installed, make-kpkg can do its magic,
building a kernel-image-2.6.x.deb and associated modules.

I am now wondering if it would be possible to skip step (3), allowing
make-kpkg to operate directly on the sources for the kernel source
package. This would save a lot of time on local builds that don't need
to publish patched kernel sources, and one would not have to fiddle
around with kernel-source-2.6.x.deb.

I am mainly in interested in using part of the Debian patches for my
local kernel.

Before I delve into make-kpkg code, I would like to ask for your
comments. Maybe I am just barking up the wrong tree.

Greetings
Marc

Hi,

This seemed to be a wishlist bug about a discussion, which we
have now had. I think we need a little more work on exactly what is
the desired course of action before we push this on to the BTS.
