gets reset incorrectly. For instance /tmp/user/0 will be owned by user
with id 1000 - in fact this is the most frequent

Sorry about that.

As is often the case, sitting down to write the bug report revealed my
own stupidity (in configuring gdm in this case). On top of which I hit
the wrong button and sent off the half written bug report instead of
cancelling it.

I'll just go and crawl under a stone for a while.
