Aye,
I stumbled over the problem, when trying to monitor and eventually
restart my dsl connection via mon.
Running
/etc/init.d/ppp restart
silently fails when the connection isn't already up.
The Debian policy states, under
9.3 "System run levels and init.d scripts"
9.3.2 Writing the scripts
...
restart
stop and restart the service if it's already running, otherwise
start the service
Since the first line of the init script is
#!/bin/sh -e
the script silently terminates when the 'poff -a' command from the
'restart' section returns a non-zero value, and thus pppd isn't started.
2 fixes that come to mind are to either remove the '-e' from the #!
line, or to append a '|| /bin/true' to the 'poff -a'.
Both cases fail to recognize a possible problem in stopping the service
though, so I didn't append them as a patch here.
I categorized this as 'serious', since one can work around the problem
easily, but the script doesn't behave as expected or documented.
