ah, crap.  i previously there was a /etc/default hook there but none
provided by the package, so i thought to myself "who could be using
this?".   clearly people *are* using it, so i'll  modify the script to
source both, with the original taking precedence (going last) over the
new one, so that default options don't override settings already there.

feel free to file a bug on this in the meantime (i'd appreciate if you
quoted this message to keep my memory fresh about what i want to do)
