The program insists on a valid ISBN which really limits the
possibilities to published books with know isbn.
Without isbn it can be used to also index articles and similar even
without adding support for customisable fields.

Alexandria's author informs me that having an ISBN number is no longer a
requirement for books as of version 0.5.0. Hence, I'm closing this bug.
(It's possible to create books without ISBNs by using the manual book
addition dialog, or to remove ISBNs from books using the properties
dialog.)
Thanks,
