gnome depends on totem-mozilla. But there are alternatives which may
work better: mozilla-mplayer, mozilla-plugin-vlc. It would be nice to
have altenative dependencies to these plugins because you need to
uninstall gnome to use them.

Just like there are alternatives to totem, to epiphany, to evolution,
etc.
The "gnome" metapackage is here to provide a full-fledged GNOME desktop.
If you don't want such a desktop, you can install only part of it.
