I have >130 vcards to import but contacts doesn't allow multiple files
to be selected for a single import. I can't really use contacts when it
means laboriously clicking through so many dialogues. Is multiple import
to be supported in later versions?

vCard is a container format, a single file can contain multiple cards.
If you have a single contact per card, simply cat them all into a single
file and import that.
Yes, it would be useful to allow multiple selection too.
