I'm not actually sure of the package, but various gtk applications have
started to print out just point clouds instead of text recently. Not
all the time, but possibly alternating between point clouds and proper
text between updates. An image of the situation can be found at

It could also have something to do with cairo, since I noticed ages ago
that it's totally broken in this respect.
I use beautiful old X fonts (Helvetica in particular) instead of
poorly-rendered TTF fonts. At least I think so. It's becoming
almost impossible to get apps to use those nice fonts anymore.
