Looking at the code for the
/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/eventhandlers/distributed-monitoring/submit_check_result_via_nsca
command, it shows that the check status is passed incorrectly to NSCA as
either "OK, WARNING, CRITICAL, or UNKNOWN".
According to the documentation included with Nagios, these error codes
should be "0, 1, 2 or -1"
Looks like you guys are including a really old version of this check:

hi bruce,
the bug you're reporting has been previously reported and fixed in the
version mentioned above. while the fix won't make it to sarge, it's
already present in etch/sid.
