I use tar to backup my server to a parallel port tape drive (using ftape).
I backup the files using:
tar cvzf /dev/qft0 --blocking-factor=58 -T file_list
After backing up the files I check the backup using the command:
tar dzf /dev/qft0 --blocking-factor=58 -T file_list
I get the following errors in the output (bottom of list):

If I extract the files everything is extracted fine, including the files
reported as missing in the diff.
tar xvzf /dev/qft0 --blocking-factor=58 -T file_list
It seems that all the files that the diff complains about have [ in their
names. An earlier error didn't have ]:
