Package: mozilla-browser
Version: 2:1.6-5
The machine I run my Mozilla on was just updated to sarge from woody,
and my Mozilla now does not perform adequately for display updates.
X server and ssh client:
Debian potato, non-Debian XFree86 3.3.6 XF86-SVGA,
`Matrix G200 AGP' according to the X server,
ssh 1:1.2.3-9.3, PIII/800 256Mb, vtwm 5.4.5a-5
X client and ssh server:
Debian sarge, Mozilla 2:1.6-5, ssh 1:3.8.1p1-8,
PIII/700 256Mb
The symptoms:
* Anything which causes Mozilla to need to repaint its window takes a
longer time than is acceptable. For example, a page down using the
Next key scrolls the pane immediately but takes at least half a
second to fill in the newly-exposed area of the webpage (sometimes
longer). Similar delays are observed with window raise etc.
* Switching back and forward between two simple cached webpages
takes at least 2s per switch (from clicking on the back or forward
button on the navigation toolbar to seeing the new changed
contents).
* Many other operations are unexpectedly slow, with delays of up to
a few seconds in some cases. Switching panes in the preferences
window is one example. It's difficult to find reproducible delays
besides on window refresh but the whole problem is pervasive.
* Using a direct TCP connection to the X server (ie, no encryption,
no ssh) improves the performance dramatically. There is still a
hint of a problem, but most operations that were unuseably slow are
now just about useable (eg, page switch in maybe 500ms).
I suspect that Mozilla is synchronising with the X server too often.
Ian.

I'll close this bug assuming it was reported elsewhere in the meanwhile.
If this is not the case, please reopen and reassign.
