I think it was since I got 1.7 installed that I didn't get the emoticons
displayed anymore. Mozilla simply doesn't display smilies in e-mails
anymore at all.

I guess you installed the theme globally, as root, and not using a
debian package, in which case you hit #163624 and duplicates.
