My problem is very similar to this previously posted mailing list entry:

When I change the keyboard layout in Gnome with the corresponding app in the system settings of Gnome (e.g. from pc-101 to pc-104), the system completely freezes with no errors being written to any log file (afaik). There is no response to kbd, mouse or network (ssh). Only reset is possible.
