This machine is not exactly a speed monster by any token, but the one
thing in Evolution which I find is unbearably slow is the time zone
selector in the account setup / settings. In particular, when you
left-click, maybe just to select something, with no particular
intention to zoom anything, it starts a zoom animation which just
never seems to end (it does, eventually, after about a minute
... Update: timed it; it's actually 17 seconds. Still an order of
magnitude too much).
This is an IBM 600E ThinkPad, vintage late 1990s (?), Neomagic video
chipset, regular XFree86 from unstable. Generally graphics are
acceptable, and I would imagine that the effect isn't particularly
fast even on today's regular desktops without special video hardware
(I have a Dell 270GX with i810 something which is not available to me
right now, but I'm used to using it as a benchmark and would think I
can allow myself to speculate a bit on this).
My modest proposal would be to make the animation less smooth,
probably by about a factor of 10, or ideally completely optional
(perhaps look for accelerated video and disable it if none detected?)
since it hampers usability for no substantial value to what is after
all a very minor dialog which most users will see once or never.
