Package: login
Version: 20000902-12
Severity: normal
Normal case at the login prompt:
a <backspace>
results in an empty login prompt (i.e. the a gets erased). If I, at
any time in the login prompt, I enter an umlaut, i.e. ä, ö or ü, the
backspace still works (i.e. the umlaut gets erased) but the screen
gets garbled:
sixtyfor login: ü ¦ ¦
After login in on that shell, also in some programms (notable the vi)
the umlaute are broken, e.g. äöü becomes dv| , also a few other keys
lost their meaning. On the shell (bash) I do not see any difference wether
I used umlaute in the login prompt or not.
If I do *not* use any umlaute in the login prompt, then everything is
normal.
At first I thought of a font problem, but copy and paste of a wrong output
into a sane virtual terminal still preserves the letters, i.e. the above dv|
was pasted from a broken virtual terminal, where I used umlaute in the
login prompt, to one where I did not use umlaute in the login prompt and I
am now able to type äöü just fine.
Since login seems to cause this behaviour, I assing the bug to it. Please
reassing it to the proper package if login is indeed only a victim, not
the cause of the problem.
And yes, I am aware that umlaute have nothing to do within a login name,
but I sometimes mistype a login name (and hence enter an umlaut by
accident). Surprisingly, ß or any other key for that matter, does not
cause any problem.
