Package: firefox
Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-3
Severity: normal
I prefer to view PDF file using xpdf, so I've set it as my default handler
for application/pdf.
Most of the time when firefox comes across a pdf file, it offers it to me
via xpdf, with the open-file dialog showing "Open with [/usr/bin/xpdf
(default)]". This is what I want it to do. Below the xpdf drop-down entry
are no other entries besides "Other...".
But every so often when I click on a pdf file, instead of offering me xpdf,
the dialog show "Open with [evince (default)]" instead! There is no listing
of xpdf in the drop-down list or any thing else other than "Other...".
The behaviour seems to be random, since I can Cancel the dialog box, click
on the link again and this time "xpdf [default]" will be back again. Because
of this, I don't seem to have any reliable way of reproducing the error. It
happens when it happens, maybe once every two days (every 20 or so pdf
files). Here, I've just clicked on the same link over and over, and evince
came up the 13th time. But trying to repeat it again, I got bored after 30
repetitions of xpdf, with a no show from evince.
It just happened again after 15 or 20 clicks on
http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_3.1.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-Core-generic.pdf
linked from
http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_3.1.0/LSB-Core-generic/index.shtml
(repeated after another 20 or so clicks).
I don't know why firefox sometimes grabs evince like this. The only thing I
can think of is that I think Gnome/nautilus uses evince by default, so maybe
the Gnome settings are somehow leaking over into firefox. In
/etc/mailcap.order I have set xpdf-reader:application/pdf, which I
understamd is the normal way to make xpdf the system default reader.
The bug is more weird than troubling, though it's a bit annoying have to
click cancel and then reclick on the pdf link. I'm marking the bug "normal"
rather than "minor" since maybe it's a symptom of some underlying problem
which might be more serious.
The behaviour has been happening for a long time (since firefox 1.0 or
thereabouts). Since it's still happening in 1.5, I figured it was time to
report it.

I haven't noticed the pdf handler problem in a while now, and I can't
reproduce it at the moment, so I guess we can assume it got fixed in v2.
