Package: libnss-ldap
Version: 186-1
Package: libpam-ldap
Version: 140-1
Package: slapd
Version: 2.1.22

Using the above combination, I cannot authenticate
ldap users through pam_ldap. The problem seems to be
lying in libnss-ldap as if I :

1. add another 'read-only' user in slapd.conf which
would be able to read userPassword
2. use this 'read-only' user in libnss_ldap.conf as
binddn, I can authenticate ldap users.

I don't know if this is an upstream problem(as the
libnss_ldap.conf documentation hinted that anonymous
bind is default which I believe should work) or a
debian specific problem.

Interestingly, 'finger' works in anonymous bind mode
for libnss_ldap.

Anyway, with the current debian packages, things just
won't work.

I still maintain the point that designing a monolithic kernel in 1991 is a
fundamental error. Be thankful you are not my student. You would not get a
high grade for such a design :-)
