As a work around, I tried starting the theme manager (now
called "Appearance" I see) and changing my theme from
"custom". Specifying pure clearlooks themed all my open
GTK apps. There wasn't a gnome-settings-daemon running
when I quit the theme chooser but starting a new one worked
this time.
I'm guessing that whatever my "Custom" theme was caused
g-s-d to choke. I'm also guessing I've trashed the relevant
data by selecting a different theme in the chooser :(

Yes, unfortunately. I have discussed this issue with upstream in
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492721 and we haven't been
able to track down the problem. I'll have to close the bug because there
is nothing we can do about it right now.
If anyone can reproduce the problem, please back up your GConf settings
somewhere before selecting a new theme.
Thanks,
