hesiod is handy, it's a nice lightweight way to share user
info. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work very well anymore. ssh
just fails. I think with "(pam_unix) check pass; user unknown" su is a
little more informative with:
su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.
(Ignored)
both of these problems go away if I add shadow entries.
Oddly, if I shadowconfig off, it doesn't work until I add an entry to
/etc/passwd. tcpdump does show the TXT? queries.

This is not a bug in the hesiod package; the hesiod package only provides
the hesinfo utility and the libhesiod library. Support for Hesiod-based
logins comes from glibc itself.
Unless you are trying to connect your system to a site with a pre-existing
Hesiod deployment, I strongly recommend *not* using Hesiod. In any case, I
have never heard of a site that distributed passwords using Hesiod -- you
most likely cannot use pam_unix with libnss_hesiod, but need something like
pam_krb5 instead for authentication purposes.
