Subject: Package: links numbering scheme is arbitrary and harmful

Package: links
For example: the upstream package, "Elinks" has a current version number
of: 0.4.2rc2 the links package in its changelog.gz even recognizes
these numbers. The Debian version of the package currently is
:0.96.20020409-2
Change: this number scheme to better reflect the upstream version.
Why? I sent an email to the Elinks mailing list, and to communicate what
version I was using, I obviously could not tell the debian version
number (1 reason). So instead I had to :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:[~]%links -version
ELinks 0.4pre5 - Text WWW browser
(2nd reason).
And we see immediately the normal upstream numbering scheme here, and
hence just how shallow the debian numbering scheme is (3rd reason).
THEN, someone on the mailing list replied to my issue and said "yes its
fixed in v. 0.4.2rc1". So how with the debian numbering scheme am I to
be able to verify if a version with the change Im looking for is
anywhere in debian (4th reason). Well... I could add to my sources.list
some unstable servers (5th reason). And apt-get update (6th), and
apt-get source for the unstable version (7th), and look at the docs
(8th), and MAYBE I will find the correct information (9th)....
I think my point is clear.

these were fixed as far as I see (either it's fixed, I cannot reproduce or they
seem to be
left alone by the submitter).
if it's still valid please reopen and tell me about it.
