Package: procps
Version: 1:3.1.9-1

"Top" works OK on my monitor and on /dev/ttyS0, but it doesn't work on
ttyS4, my 20-year-old dumb terminal. When I type "top", all I get are a
bunch of invisible escape sequences sent to the terminal. I know this
since I can put the terminal into control-character-visible mode where I
can see all the control characters. When I plug the terminal into
another serial port (ttyS0), top works OK.

Now ttyS4 is different than ttyS0. ttyS4 is a PCI serial port, while
ttyS0 is an old ISA serial port set up with jumpers. ttyS4 seems to
work fine with the dumb terminal except for "top". I use ttyS4 for
editing with vim, Internet browsing with lynx, mutt email, etc.
ttyS4 is a very high speed port and unless Baud_base is changed using
"setserial" the actual speed is 8 times whatever speed one sets. But I
don't think this has anything to do with the "top" problem. I get the
"top" problem regardless of whether or not I change Baud_base. Right
now, I tell inittab to talk to my terminal at 1200 baud but it actually
talks at 9600 baud (and I have set the physical terminal to 9600 baud).
This works fine.

Now if I type "top > me" and then inspect "me" with vim it looks good.
It I then type: "cat me" I see the correct top display. So using the
redirection operator fixes the problem. I just tried: "top | cat" and
this fixes the problem and the display is OK. But "top" alone still
doesn't work.

Now to describe the invisible escape sequences. If I look at the "me"
file (using vim or most) I find the very same escape sequences as "top"
sends to the terminal (but not all of them). The main difference is
that the normally visible words and digits used in the "top" display
are missing. Also, many of the escape sequences embedded in the "header"
and "body" of the top display are missing too. The missing are mostly
the sequences for setting the characters displayed to bold (and back to
normal). So what I'm getting is a subset of the escape sequences with
all printable data stripped. Why?

Could this be a problem with ncurses? Or with top's interface to it.
I'm using ncurses-bin version 5.3.20030510. Does it have anything to do
with the PCI bus? Too bad I don't have another PCI serial port to check
this out. I'm using kernel 2.4.22.

I'll try it on kernel 2.2 (which has no automatic detection for the
serial port on the PCI bus). I did this but couldn't get ttyS4 to work
right so I couldn't even log in. Not sure what the problem was but it's
not part of my complaint about "top".

                        David Lawyer
