When selecting "configure network settings", network-admin is called and not
found, so
missing dependency. But when I install gnome-system-tools and run
network-admin, I get
"unsupported platform" -- that's sid. Any way around this? Nice idea (icon
still missing).

As previously stated netapplet doesn't requiere gnome-system-tools for
work, however it's required for network configuration preferences.
Currently the package has a Recommends dependency, so it will
likely to be installed on average systems, since now the package
managers install recommeds by default.
