Package: xmms
Version: 1.2.10+cvs20050209-2
Severity: wishlist
I just helped a friend install sarge on a laptop. He elected to install
the desktop environment task. He logged into his new sarge system and
got a GNOME desktop; however, xmms's output plugin was set to OSS. The
result of his initial attempt to play music was a lockup, since xmms and
esd battled over /dev/dsp. This didn't impress my friend very much.
I agree with him. Debian should work properly when freshly installed.
Perhaps xmms should have a configuration option, selected by
default, which causes it to use esd when esd is running.

The xmms package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.
For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/461309 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.
Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.
Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
