When playing xmms spits out:
** WARNING **: SNDCTL_DSP_SETFMT ioctl failed: Invalid argument
** WARNING **: SNDCTL_DSP_SPEED ioctl failed: Invalid argument
And, predictably, playback is at the wrong speed and format.
If you use mpg321 first, xmms still spits out the errors,
but because the audio device setting is persistant, it will
play back correctly.
