Package: xmms
Version: 1.2.10+cvs20050809-5
Severity: important

'xmms' usually works fine, but a few days ago after some upgrades, this
happens on the command line when I hit the 'play' button:

    % xmms
    Message: device: default
    xmms: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.
    Aborted
    % echo $?
    134

Observations:

It doesn't crash on play if I change:

    'Options>Preferences>Audio I/O Plugins>Output Plugin>'

...to something other than Alsa, (my old default), but I at present
don't hear anything with 'esd' or 'oss', (both have worked in the past).

Some sound outside of 'xmms' still works; 'alsaplayer' works fine. But
'totem' gives a similar error:

    <stuff deleted>
    *** attempt to put segment in horiz list twice
    esd: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.

    ** (totem:6505): WARNING **: Failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon: Unable
to determine the address of the message bus
    totem: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.
    esd: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.

...as does 'xine':

    % xine Desktop/sound/Optigan/Optiganally_Yours_-_Powerhouse_A.mp3
    This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.3.
    (c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
    xine: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.
    Aborted

...and also 'gmplayer', (excerpt):

    esd: conf.c:3144: snd_config_iterator_first: Assertion `node->type ==
SND_CONFIG_TYPE_COMPOUND' failed.
    [AO ESD] esd_open_sound failed: No child processes
    Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
    Audio: no sound

Therefore it looks like this isn't an 'xmms' bug, and should probably
be merged with some unknown (to me) library bug. Still, if only for
the record, here's one for 'xmms' users.

Hope this helps...

The xmms package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/461309 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
