I considered that this could be a problem with qjackctl, but I can't
connect using xmms with the jack output plugin either:

Even though jackd was scrolling lines like:

load = 0.0556 max usecs: 13.000, spare = 23206.000

down the console, indicating to me that it at least thinks it's running.
There are actually two jack output plugins for xmms, and I can't tell them
apart. The other one gave the error:
jack_open: jack server not running?
on the xmms console.

The xmms-jack package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/456751 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
