Package: smail
Version: 3.2.0.101-4.5

When i run /usr/sbin/smailconfig and enter a hostname with a leading digit or
a digit immediately following a period (like "2.se" (and like my ISP)) i get
the message:

>Each component must start with a letter, end with an alphanum and contain
>only alphanums and hyphens. Components must be separated by full stops.

,and a reference to rfc1035.

Excuse me if I don't really know what I am what I am talking about here,
but I checked rfc1035 and some others, and found the standard rfc1123 that
to me seem to allow leading digits:
>One aspect of host name syntax is hereby changed: the
>restriction on the first character is relaxed to allow either a
>letter or a digit. Host software MUST support this more liberal
>syntax.

To my understanding smailconfig is wrong in not accepting the first character
in a host name to be a digit.

I am using Debian 2.0.

The smail package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/474068 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
