Package: smail
Version: 3.2.0.100-4

The configuration script gives five options:

 (1) Internet site: you send and receive Internet mail on this
    machine, using SMTP over TCP/IP.
 (2) UUCP to smarthost (upstream site):
You send and receive mail via UUCP; outbound mail is sent to your
smarthost (probably your service provider) for routing and delivery.
 (3) Satellite system:
No mail is to be delivered or routed here. Any mail generated
on this system is sent to a central mail switch using SMTP.
 (4) Local delivery only:
You are not on a network. Mail for local users is delivered.
 (5) No configuration:
No configuration will be done now; your mail system will be broken and
should not be used. You must then do the configuration yourself later or
run this script, /usr/sbin/smailconfig, as root.

None of these seems appropriate for a common case: a site which
sends mail using SMTP, but receives it using a POP server.

Each brand new user must configure smail during initial installation.
To make that as painless as possible, the script should explicitly
address POP mail, and SLIP and PPP as well as UUCP.

The smail package has been removed from Debian testing, unstable and
experimental, so I am now closing the bugs that were still opened
against it.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/474068 . That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed, and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
