Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.20.2-1
Severity: normal
When downloading a file by right-clicking on a link and choosing "Save
Link As...", Epiphany saves gzipped data to disk if the webserver uses
the gzip content-encoding for sending the file over the network.
Downloading the file by left-clicking on it, or dragging it to a folder
window, works correctly.
Background: if an HTTP response includes the header "Content-Encoding: gzip",
it means that the body of the response is gzipped for the purpose of being
sent over the network, and the receiving user agent (i.e. Epiphany) is
supposed to un-gzip it before doing anything with it. (This is different
from downloading a .gz file, which has nothing to do with the HTTP
Content-Encoding header.)
I observed this problem with the file "openwrt-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx"
located at <http://downloads.openwrt.org/kamikaze/7.09/brcm-2.4/>. If I
left-click on the file or drag the link to my desktop, I get the correct
..trx file (md5sum 0b708bcc864b768aba88b4b564dab412). If I right-click
on it and "Save Link As...", I get gzipped data (md5sum
930f1178aad407d7bb8a5bfdac4d2c41) which should've been decompressed by
the browser, but wasn't. This leads to confusion and files seeming to
be corrupted -- it's a .trx file, not a .trx.gz file.
I've also seen this happen with other files from other sites; it's not
specific to the OpenWRT files. It seems that any server that uses
"Content-Encoding: gzip" will trigger the problem.

This bug seems to be fixed by the move to gecko 1.9. Please reopen if
appropriate.
