--- Begin Message ---Package: bridge-utils Version: 1.4-3 Following the documentation in /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/examples/bridge and bridge-utils-interfaces(5) it does not really explain very well how to use a bridge interface on a system which has existing interfaces. For example, if a system has an eth0 interface and a wlan0 wireless interface, and wants to be able to bridge one, both, or none of them at different times depending upon their location, its not clear what one is supposed to do. It appears that when stanzas in /etc/network/interfaces such as: allow-hotplug eth0 auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 10.0.0.40 netmask 255.0.0.0 # network 10.0.0.0 # broadcast 10.0.0.255 gateway 10.0.0.1 auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 10.0.0.40 network 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 broadcast 10.255.255.255 gateway 10.0.0.1 # bridge_ports all bridge_ports eth0 bridge_fd 9 bridge_hello 2 bridge_maxage 12 bridge_stp off bridge_maxwait 5 the br0 interface replaces eth0 as the primary active interface on the system. Ifconfig will show eth0 with no configured address. This is a bit confusing. Also, it is not clear what effect udev has on all of this due to its rule for eth0 in /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules which recognizes the card according to its MAC address. Should this entry be removed? When a second card, such as a wireless card, exists on the system it gets even more confusing. There may be circumstances when the wireless interface is the primary interface on the system, and it is not clear how to easily reconfigure the bridge to use it instead of eth0. Also, it appears that sometimes the wireless interface is inoperable when br0 is present. Is it possible to provide more clear documentation and perhaps a way to use debconf or a dedicated script to help manage bridged interfaces on the system?
