Let me tell you about the egregious package, ttf-kochi-mincho.

Take this file,
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd";>

<html>

 <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content=

 <h2 lang="zh-tw">經緯度查詢</h2>

 <h2>經緯度查詢</h2>
</body>
</html>

Well, with ttf-kochi-mincho installed, the lines without lang="zh-tw"
look terrible. With characters missing many pixels, e.g., 您, and 辦,
so much that one cannot guess what character they are.
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 helps but the characters still look like they had
mild polio disease.

In the H2 example, 經 becomes very lightly colored unless you reduce
size with CTRL-minus. Here MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 does not help.

I don't know how to tell what fonts firefox is using other than
arduous
lsof|...|diff, which showed

So I purged ttf-kochi-mincho and finally my life is back to normal.

As far as firefox "Preferences" goes, forget it, as one cannot find
much matching names inside its cavernous caverns.

As far as dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config goes, forget it
as it doesn't seem to help.

As far as everything else goes, forget it as it is all not clear.

Anyway, I purged ttf-kochi-mincho and my life is back on track.

I'm not sure what happens next time I need to read Japanese though.

This may clear some of my previous firefox bugs, but I dare not judge
that myself.

OK, I reinstalled them and it looks fine now. So closing. (However I
don't even know if those are the fonts firefox is using -- I am so
dumb about fonts.)
