pal barfs when austria.pal is used as its calendar file is ISO-8859
encoded, instead of UTF-8:

ERROR: Event text 'Heilige Dreiknige' is not ASCII or UTF-8 in file
/usr/share/pal/austria.pal.
ERROR: Event text 'Mari Himmelfahrt' is not ASCII or UTF-8 in file
/usr/share/pal/austria.pal.
ERROR: Event text 'Mari Empfngnis' is not ASCII or UTF-8 in file
/usr/share/pal/austria.pal.
ERROR: Event text 'Grndonnerstag' is not ASCII or UTF-8 in file
/usr/share/pal/austria.pal.
ERROR: Event text 'Ende Sommerzeit --- Uhren zurckstellen' is not ASCII or
UTF-8 in file /usr/share/pal/austria.pal.

Thus the events appear trimmed in pal's calendar overview. I suggest a iconv

Kind regards,
Philipp Kern
