the ASCII NUL character (referred as ^@) was historically used to insert
space at curent position.
This is still documented, but now it toggles block selection method.
the behaviour or menu need to be fixed. I'd like to switch back to the old
behaviour

I don't remember which version of JOE has this fixed, but I know it's fixed
in JOE 3.5
