Package: cups
Priority: important

System:

lenny, fresh install in September, updated 1/11/08
uname -a:
Linux srv1 2.6.26-1-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Oct 9 14:16:53 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
HP xw4300

Printer: HP LaserJet 3055 connected by USB

Steps to reproduce the problem:

1. Boot the computer (problem occurs first time you try to print after each boot)

2. Check the printer status in CUPS, http://localhost:631: the printer appears to be enabled

3. Send a job to the printer

4. A pop-up appears warning that there was a problem and the printer has been disabled

5. Go to http://localhost:631 and manually enable the printer

6. The print job is now printed without further errors

Obviously, step 5 is a real nuisance - a user shouldn't have to manually enable the printer when they want to print

Looking at /var/log/syslog:

Nov 2 11:27:53 srv1 hal_lpadmin: remove
Nov 2 11:27:53 srv1 hal_lpadmin: Found configured printer: HP_LaserJet_3055

and /var/log/cups/error_log:
