I split my mail with procmail, then use Gnus with various nnfolder settings
to read these different spools. Using Emacs 20 with Gnus 5.8.8 (from the
gnus package) this worked fine. However, I've installed Emacs 21,
with Gnus 5.9.0 (and apt-get remove --purge'd the gnus package) and now I
can no longer get mail.

Whenever Emacs tries to get the mail from the spool location and deliver
it to the nnfolder file, I get this message in the minibuffer:

movemail: (0 return). Continue? (yes or no)

It does this for every spool file that contains mail. No matter what I
reply to this question, I never see any new articles in my nnspool groups.

However, then I looked in *Messages* and I see stuff about a crash box and
articles being written to ~/Mail/misc; apparently all my mail is being
dumped in that one spot! Here are my *Messages*:

nnfolder: Reading incoming mail from directory...
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail (no new mail)...done
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail from directory...
  Processing mail from ~/.emacs-mail-crash-box...
  Saving file /opt/home/psmith/Mail/mail/misc...
  Wrote /opt/home/psmith/Mail/mail/misc
nnfolder: Reading incoming mail (1 new)...done

I checked the permissions on the 21.1 movemail binary and they seem correct:
setgid mail (the same as the 20.7 version).

Ouch, this is a serious problem :-/.

I should point out that I've also used VM with this version of Emacs, and
VM _can_ obtain mail (and I'm sure it uses the same movemail program
that Gnus uses), so I don't think it's a movemail issue per se...?
