Package: zsh
Version: 4.3.2-14
Severity: wishlist

zsh-newuser-install requires every user in my system running zsh having empty
.zshrc files around. I literally _hate_ tools depending on unnecessary dot-files
or having startup banners. I think this is also pretty stupid, as all
information given in zsh-newuser-install can be obtained by the man page.
I would prefer a prominent note in the man page to run zsh-newuser-install for
first-timers. I don't think zsh is exactly the best shell for newbyes that don't
know how to lookup a man page.

This is not a rant, just a critique. I simply disabled the function on my
system.

thanks

The initial issue comes down to either not doing it or
doing it, both of which are a personal preference.
Upstream decided to do it this way and I, and most
people I talked to about Zsh with over time, prefer
this behaviour.

Zsh without a sane RC file is next to useless so
either the user needs to set it, with which the
function helps or the admin sets it in which case
there are several workarounds for this.

The trade-off points towards helping users, i.e.
not removing this function.

The second issue, which was wedged into this
report is extremely bad and harmful. It has been
resolved though, so I will spare myself cloning &
closing it :)

Richard
