modprobe skips /etc/modprobe.d entirely if /etc/modprobe.conf is
present. This had me confused for a long while, until I actually looked
at the source. Part of this is due to the fact that the manpage is not
very explicit about this behavior. This should probably be fixed
upstream.

Then feel free to send a patch upstream, I think that everything is
documented.
