I'm using grub 1.96. I have installed both memtest86 and memtest86+.
In /boot/grub/grub.cfg there is a line missing to get the package works.
Insert
set root=(hdX,Y)
before
linux /memtest86+.bin
This works for me. I have the boot partition separeted from the root
