With this patch, Debian's freetype packages render fonts poorly when
anti-aliasing is in use. For comparison, here's a screenshot of the
GNOME 2.2 fonts dialog with the Debian freetype package at 100dpi with
AA enabled.

By recompiling the freetype package without this patch (simply
commenting out that line in debian/rules) we get a far superior result:

This matches the quality of rendering people will expect from other
software collections or distributions.
(Footnote: I realise there's a slight artefact or two in the screenshot,
this got fixed in a more recent version of freetype -- the shots are
from 2.1.4)

The original problem reported here has been resolved by enabling autohinting
via fontconfig, so I think this bug can be closed now. (If more changes
were needed to freetype, I'm sure Scott would have made them before now in
Ubuntu, and he hasn't. :)
