I am attempting to use a high-quality (manually hinted) monospace font
("TheSansMono Office") which works correctly on other platforms (e.g. OS X,
Windows) but does not render correctly here. Interestingly, it works fine
with the GIMP (2.0.1) but terminal programs and other programs such as
'xchat' are broken. Please take a look at the PNG files available from:
http://parallel.hpc.unsw.edu.au/~duraid/thesansmono/
to see what is going on. Essentially, GIMP is the only program that works
correctly (and it does so even with "vertical spacing" set to 0.0) but other
programs become unusuable as the bottom half of characters get chopped off
(mild in gvim - though underscores are invisible, very serious in the
terminal emulators)
