I use a LCD with subpixel antialiasing enabled.
The latest upgrade from 2.1.10-3 -> 2.2.1-1 decreased the quality
significantly.
I prepared two screenshots, before [1] and after [2].
Please also note that with 2.2.1 the fonts in the menu of Thunderbird
and Firefox look different.
Please revert the changes back to the state of 2.1.10-3.

Between the enabling of FT_CONFIG_OPTION_SUBPIXEL_RENDERING in the latest
build of freetype in unstable, and use of the native hinter by default, I
/think/ this bug can be considered resolved; there are still a number of
tunable options to accomodate differing tastes in fonts, and it's possible
that one or more of these options should have its defaults adjusted yet for
the desktop case by way of fontconfig; but TTBOMK there's nothing here that
would be considered a bug in freetype itself.
If you disagree, please reopen and provide all of the following:
- the dpi of your display
- whether your display is an LCD or a CRT
- a full tarball of your /etc/fonts directory
- a description of how I can reproduce the problem with a stand-alone app
(sorry, I'm not going to change my desktop environment to try to reproduce
a freetype bug)
- the fonts you're using, and how I can get them (the package name, or a
URL; best is if the problem is reproducible using default fonts)
- a screenshot of the problem (attached, not posted to your website!) and a
description of what you consider wrong with it
- the last version of freetype known to give the correct behavior, if any.
