I can't get started because some problem with UTF-8 is resulting in a
bogus channels file.  All messages captured below.

You can't trust the broadcasters to do anything right---they'll
cheerfully hand you garbage that is *not* valid UTF-8.  If you have an
idea where to look, let me know and I'll poke at the source code.

I'm near Boston, Massachusetts, USA (ZIP 02148) and have a directional
antenna that gets maybe 80% of the local channels over the air.
